One in every pocket

One in every coat pocket, smooth and round. My mother collected small stones on beaches, in parks, in gardens. Some are from Paris, some from New Hampshire  and some from Washington. An international collection. She rubbed them between her fingers when she walked or when she waited. They inspired her when she was happy. They soothed her when she missed us and when she was ill. Some have been rubbed shiny, polished little gems.
